I don't have any friends. Also, I'm not married. So, I don't have to make that choice ever.

Oh wait, none of that is true.

Oh the good ol' trade off. The best solution I found was make a bunch of running friends and then go out after the run. Although, that doesn't change the fact that the night before the long run should be low key. So, yeah, I'm as helpful as someone not very helpful.

Anyways- referring to your question, it all depends. If I'm training for a specific race, either the long run takes precedence or I go out and end the night early. If not, I just do what I feel and accept the consequences, whatever that may be.

You raise a good point. And one of the reasons I haven't decided to do a full yet because I'm not sure that I'm ready to put in the time (among other things).

But even half marathon training is somewhat of a commitment. I think I need that in my life. If that means less drinking+more running than my friends, I'm okay with that. I think it's important to have certain "fun days" to look forward to. For example, the Super Bowl. I will NOT be going on a long run the day after it. I might do one the Saturday before though...

My long runs wholey dominate my Friday night. B.o.B and I have a solid routine of; I get to her house at 7pm, we eat dinner, she is passed out from sleep aid by 8pm, I read my book until 9pm, turn out lights and sleep. We are so awesome. :)

The only time a long run has knocked me out for the weekend is when I ran my 20. But I just think of it this way, if I run long on Saturday, I'll run in the afternoon or evening, and can still have fun on Friday. If not, than I run long on Sunday, and take it easy on Saturday. That doesn't really make sense, but it seems to work for me. Balance. One day of fun, one day of exercise.

Ah the war of the long workout v. your old friends. You need to get into a running group and make some running friends who can support your habit. Going out the night before a workout doesn't have to end -- just end it early. Go out and then call it a night around 10:00 without drinking. It can happen you know.
