How long is too long?

Recently I was having a conversation with a friend about race medals.  I’m a big race medal whore.  I’ve never made any secret that I’m basically like a cracked out chick in Hollywood doing anything to get the next hit. I’m willing to travel across the country and punish my body for hours on end only to have someone put something shiny and heavy around my neck.  Now that I think about it, most of the time I’m trying not to poop or barf on the person putting the medal around my neck.  Hmmmm, punish my body for hours...don’t barf on someone.....I’m more and more like that Hollywood crack head chick than I thought!

Anyway, we were talking about how long it is appropriate to wear your finisher medal post race.  Should you wear your shiny token of accomplishment for as long as it takes so that all of your friends and family are required/guilted to ask what that Flava-Flav style medallion is around your neck? Essentially, your own marathon of family self promotion “oh!!! I didn’t realize that I still had this on! Let me tell you about my splits from miles 5-9”. Or, should you do an NFL style swim move while the medal-hander-outer is putting it around your neck and never put the thing on?  My friend said that she essentially likes to wear it all day. To lunch....On the flight home....basically as long as she isn’t going to a bar, she has it on until she goes to bed.  I’ve even seen people wear them to work the next day thereby extending the reach of people to talk to about the race.

Looks like Flava Flav ran a spartan race - and LOOK at the size of his medal!
I'll bet he never takes that thing off

So, what do I do?  Welllllllll, I don’t know if I am totally sold for that long. Don’t get me wrong, I wear my medal PROUDLY when I finish the race.  I wear it when I’m walking to my car or the hotel..... But when I strip tease down naked to get into the shower (doesn’t everyone hum some sort of cabaret music when they get naked?) then it goes in my bag and on my SportHooks medal display at home.   While I am certainly proud of EVERY race that I do, and have no problem pretty blatantly bragging about them on my blog, I’m basically a closet runner in real life.  People do eventually find out about my running, but I don’t automatically draw attention to it.

Seriously Ryan Lochte?? Do you have to look so good doing something as stupid as biting a medal??
Although, if I won a gold, I'd never take it off. Pooping...sex...shower...NEVER

Of course, I get wanting to wear it.  I’m not sure I took my first marathon medal off for a week.  So, how long do you wear it for after you finish?

What? You mean we're supposed to take them off?

Until it swings into my beer cup and makes me spill.

I've actually run RnR Mardi Gras three times and each time I snatch that medal off my neck ASAP. For some reason that particular medal is terribly heavy and uncomfortable.

Like you, only as long as it takes me to find a shower and some clean clothes. And sometimes, I never even put it on. Just grab it from the volunteer and move along.

I don't remember putting the last couple on. I have put it around my neck, but that was more to facilitate post race activities than anything.

I can't imagine you being a "closet" anything. I usually wear mine all day if it's a marathon. Since we usually go out after I wear it back to the hotel, then shower and put it back on for the day.

I'm not what you would call a medal whore (only have 4 medals and 2 of them are from this summer) so I usually take them off by shower time and don't put them back on. I appreciate seeing other people in their medals around town that day but don't care to be one of them. I guess I just don't like to draw attention to myself like that.

Same as you. As soon as the clothes come off for the after party in the shower, so does the medal. I will proudly look at the hung up on my wall though every once and a while.

I'm essentially the same as you. I wear it pretty much until I shower and then it goes in the bag to get put on my hanger. But if you ask me about it, then I'll never shut up :)

I make it a habit to always take a cheesy "Olympic biting my gold medal" picture with every medal I earn!

I wear it until the next time I go to work.

I do what you do. It comes off when I shower and goes on my race medal rack.

Medals are in a drawer - Trophies are on display! Definitely need to show off the medals - it's not just about finishing the race, it's everything that went into finishing!

I wear mine for the day but when I finished Ironman I wanted to wear it forever.
In fact I still am. Under my shirt
:-)
But seriously when you finish a race at 8pm on a Sunday night you kinda feel jibbed. I really wanted to wear it all day Monday but didn't. I bought 4324 articles of IM clothing instead. I sport Ironman finishers shirts everyday!

There is no too long.

Upon arrival to the car. Here's my take on medals:

Spike wears his all day and if it was an especially big race, like a BQ marathon, he'll wear it to work the next day. I wear mine until I get home and shower.

Same deal here, once I take off the running clothes...so goes my runner mentality! At least for the afternoon and then I can look at later and remember the day.

I usually wear mine to dinner after the race and for the trip home (if I travel). once I am home sweet home, then it gets hung up and doesn't get worn anymore (by me - they all go to many show and tells at school though!)

I almost lost my CIM medal, because I left it in the hotel lobby when I went to lunch. Obviously, my answer is "not very long".

I wear mine until I get home, then I put it on the newel post. Right now all my pre-Thanksgiving medals for the year are on the Christmas tree as ornaments. Thinking I may do that with every year's haul- though my two post-Thanksgiving are still on the newel post.

But really- until your neck starts hurting, there is no such thing as too long.

oh, gawd. just re-read that. TWSS

It's been a while since I got a medal (these dang adventure races and bike races don't give them). I think I wore my 5K medal (yep, my first 5k handed out medals) for the next couple hours. I was so proud. Not sure how long I wore my first HM medal or my marathon medal...I don't think super long, though. And now they're proudly "displayed" on the curtain rod in our bedroom. :)

Ha ha ha...what is this too long thing...wear them with pride however long you like!

As soon as I get in the car I wrap it around the rear view mirror so it can admire it on the way home. Then it gets shoved into my travel bag and is promptly displayed on my running cork board along with the bib and my stats race the race.

Hannah said...

I usually take it off when I'm going out in "public". Though I'll carry it around for a few days, in case the opportunity presents itself to mention my race. What? Then it hangs on my bedroom mirror until I feel like putting it away.

I only wear medals from one race longer than a half hour after I finish, and those are medals from Grandma's Marathon. The only reason I do this is because I used to go watch my dad run this race when I was little, and my parents always have my husband and I over after, so my dad can see my shirt and medal. =)

Sue's Ramblings said...

Am not one to wear it, in fact at the finish line, I usually asked them to hand me the medal rather than put it on me.

Ryan said...

I am a wear it until the end of that day unless traveling. If traveling I will wear until I return home.

The way I look at it is that I want people in the airport to understand why I am walking funny.

Here is a follow-up, different standards for overall or age group medals?

Flava Flav is just nasty. He could only wish to have some real medals. :)

My first and only full marathon I wore it the entire day including the celebration that night. My halfs I tend to take off once I get back to the house/hotel to shower and typically give them to my kids when I get home.

i've never worn one and I've also given them all away. just not my thing.

I wear mine to brunch after and then home where it gets hung or drapped wherever it lands. Usually takes me months (or a year) to move it.

I will be running my first 21k by February, since its gonna be my first and I'll be so proud of it, I think I'll bring it to the office with me the next day (might wear it for a little). Most of my office-mates will run 6k only. So mine will be bigger than their's. :)

We were having a similar convo recently. I'll wear mine through the finishing hoopla, for the walk to the hotel or car, but never to lunch or anything like that. Prolly should, it would explain the stench and the limp!
