First, a bit of a follow up post about my “Blahs” and about my week of running. Like I whined about during my last post, I am finally at the pinnacle of my training cycle. This week I have 70 miles on the schedule, and I think that I might accidentally run 71 miles because I can’t read my own plan correctly and did one extra. What that means is that: when I am not running, I’m eating like that little orphan boy Timmy at a Golden Coral buffet. “Why yes sir, I would like some more sliced roast beef” (Didn’t he also play a cricket in the movie Pinocchio?)
What last weekend and the beginning of this week had in suckiness, my run this morning made up for in pure kick-ass’d-ness. (I think I just invented a word!) I had 12 miles on the schedule with 7 at tempo pace of 6:45. I was very nervous beforehand and actually tweeted (at 4:30am):
But, as you can see by my next tweet, I KILLED the run – exactly what I needed. While I still am feeling a bit “blah”, a solid performance was all it took to brighten that light at the end of the tunnel.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During my tempo run this morning, I passed by a number of girls and even a few dudes either out
While I was running, I couldn’t help but notice something rather strange about 90% of the people in full workout gear at 4am: they had put on perfume or cologne.
Now, I’m certainly not part K9 nor am I pregnant, but I KNOW that is what I smelled. That got me thinking - am I totally stinking up the joint? Before I run (in the morning), I don’t put on deodorant, I don’t brush my teeth, and I certainly don’t put on cologne. I remember that when I belonged to a gym, there were all sorts of hard bodies who would almost have pigpen style smell marks radiating from their bodies because of all of the body spray they were putting on. But, I guess I incorrectly assumed that people who were going to be outside (again, in workout clothes) wouldn’t bother!
So, am I totally the smelly kid in class? Should I start to froo-froo up with Axe body spray like the high school kids at the bus stop? Could I pull off smelling like “Dragon’s Blood” or “Ripping Skater Blaster” (or whatever the flavors are)?

I'm a dirtbag, and I'm cool with that.
I'm not a real perfume-y girl, though I do like my scented lotion...not when it'll be drawing bugs, though, or when I'm going to shower it off when I'm done.
I brush my teeth before working out but that is about it.
Not gross at all! I wear deodorant only and that's just because it helps with chafing with sports bras, not actually for the smell. Race day is a different though I take lots of pics and meet new people before so I try to look slightly better lol.
My early morning runs, tooth brushing is a must! I just wouldn't feel right.
Why waste my Axe Body Spray when I'm just going to shower after the run, anyway? The less I waste before a run the more I can spray on afterward.
So, my real answer is no, I never bother except in the rare occasion that I run with a group, then i'll swipe some deodorant on.
I don't know anyone who wears perfume during a run. Unless it was AFTER work and they had it on from ealier in the day.
So, while I don't know you very well...or at all...I think maybe: a)You have a brain disorder that is causing you to smell these mysterious "odors" b)The women (and some of the men) read your blog, knew you were running, and are coming on to you. I was disappointed that wasn't one of the choices to vote on...
I don't put deodorant on before running (seriously, in this climate that's just a joke), but I do brush my teeth. I can't take the unbrushed teeth feeling.
Something else I don't do? Put on makeup before going to the gym. Not sure what the point of that one is.
i put on deodorant before i run. my husband makes fun of me when i do this, but i do it anyway!
I will not run without brushing my teeth. (Sometimes I chew gum while running, too.) But absolutely NO WAY on perfum-y stuff. Most of the time I skip deodorant, too. Why bother? It will all sweat off in the first 5 minutes anyway! (I do shower and apply appropriate products immediately AFTER working out, though.)
PS - relevant article about sweating and being proud of it in Runner's World this month.
I rarely run in the morning, but when I do I'm pretty much crawling out of bed and lacing up. During my night runs I tend to look/smell like a high maintenance girl only because I forget to wash off my makeup or still smell like whatever body spray I had on from the day.
I can't leave my house without brushing my teeth.
On the other hand, I remember to wear deodorant maybe once a week. Pity my coworkers.
I don't understand perfume at all.
I don't even brush my hair. I look like I've rolled in shit anyway, by the end of my runs.
It makes my after-run shower more special (and much appreciated)
Sara
I always brush my teeth before hand.
I run with my husband and sometimes my son and getting a face full of someone elses morning breath is revolting.
I think a better question is do you run with bed head or not?
I brush my teeth but didn't worry about deodorant until the hubs commented on how stankarific I was post run last week.
Sometimes I put on deodorant and I almost always brush my teeth (it makes my mouth feel much better and makes breathing feel easier).
I don't do many morning runs, that's just crazy talk. I definitely need to shave the teeth first thing in the morning though otherwise everything tastes/smells like a squirrel climbed up your face and poo'd in you mouth...not that I've ever tasted poo...honestly...nevermind...Everything else can wait until post run.
I brush my teeth but that's it. I figure if someone has to give me CPR it's the least I can do.
Youre too fast to leave a scent!
I always brush the teeth before a run. I really dont know if I am stinking up the joint or not -- maybe its not road kill I smell????
I don't even put on deodorant when I go to the gym... I figure the previous day's is still there, right?!
The only time I might smell decent in the gym is when I work out in the PM and came from work. Then again, on those days, I don't put perfume in fear of "wasting it."
Haha, you're TOTALLY the stinky kid in class! I can smell you from WI.
Well timed post! After a morning run this week that had me running past a guy who bathed in Axe (that's Axe, not ass - but the difference is generally imperceptible), I said the following to my husband: "I'd rather smell someone's BO than their cologne."
If in doubt, go without!!
I do put on deodorant... but i dont go out of my way to smell pretty or brush my teeth if i haven't already lol... i do brush my teeth if i'm heading out to a race though...
I do deodorant just so I don't knock myself out from the smell on my run. Granted I do live in MS where it's ridiculously hot and humid in the summer no matter what time you run! Deodorant is the only thing I worry with though. If I'm going to a race, I'll brush my teeth, but that's just as a courtesy to those I'll be talking to before (and after) the race. No make-up, perfume, shower or anything else though!
I can't believe so many people don't wear deodorant while running! That accounts for the super musty air I smell sometimes when lining up for races!
I refresh my deodorant before running. Even if you are going to get sweaty and stinky anyway, it helps. It really does!
Hmm, ew. I always put on deodorant when running. I don't want to be "that girl." And i totally wave & say "hi" to every runner/walker i come across too. :)
This post has left me feeling quite dirty and nasty. I ALWAYS brush, swipe and spray (albiet a body spray not full out perfume) before I run. I do it for the other runners. I just plain stink during and after. I figure if I am grossing myself out, surely other people are about to puke as well.
I am all about brushing my teeth..... not quite sure about GU though. My long run is 4 whole miles so far, so I don't think squishy nutrition is an issue just yet. I do not wear perfume if I know I'm going to run.....(shhhh, don't tell anyone) the reason is because for some reason I think bees are attracted to perfume and I don't want to unintentionally get their attention......though, being chased by bees just might get me to run faster. Hmmm..
I brush my teeth. I sometimes put on deodorant, but not often before running. Maybe I'm immune to my own stench, but I kind of...don't feel like I'm super stinky when I run. According to the internet it may be true because I have less apocrine sweat glands.
There's a guy in my running group who always smells amazing. Apparently it's the fabric softener his wife uses. Fabric softener? My clothes just get straight detergent and nothing else.
I brush my teeth (just so I don't forget to do it when I get home).
If you think running by people with strong perfume is bad, try swimming near them. Way worse.
I don't go ANYWHERE without brushing my teeth.
And you shouldn't either.
