Free Marathons, Poop Shorts, and Blogger Meetups

I haven’t posted in a day or so because it burns when I pee I haven’t been able to stretch out the 3 or 4 half posts that I have rolling around in my head. So, you know what that means: Bullet post!!!

  • My running has been up and down this week. My heel/Achilles is still pretty sore, but not so much that it slows me down or limits my runs.  However, after a killer 20 miler this weekend, I had what could only be described as a big time failure of a tempo run on Tuesday. I was 30 seconds or so per mile slower than expected for most of the tempo miles and felt tired. It was only after I had stripped completely naked that I realized what shorts I wore during the run. (I can’t make this up) My poop run shorts. I really need to burn those things:

  • Fortunately, since then I’ve had a great 7 mile marathon pace run (7 miles at 7:27 pace) and a good enough track workout (6x400 at 5:39 pace).

I’m sure everyone has heard, but Sammy Wanjiru, Beijing Olympics Marathon Gold Medalist, died earlier this week in an accident off of his second floor balcony. He was 24 years old – certainly lost WAY before his time. When I read about the details (my boy Sammy was caught in bed with another woman – by his wife….and then jumped off of the balcony to his death) I couldn’t help but be reminded of how young most of the elite athletes are. Now, I’m not saying that young people get a pass, or that old people don’t do bad things (Arnold Schwarzenegger, I’m looking in your direction) but I could certainly see how tons of money and worldwide recognition could mess with someone’s head.

Have you heard of the free marathon in Vegas? The very appropriately named “Really Big Free Marathon” is a 100% free race (as long as you toe the line) with a medal, technical tshirt, and finishers festival. So, if you don’t have anything going on Nov 3, head over to Vegas, visit the bunny ranch, play a little craps, drink your height in beer, and run a free marathon! Honestly though, when I read this, I couldn’t help but get my wheels spinning about how possible this would be with my free/fake race series the “Sweat Your Thorns Off 5K”. I’ll keep you posted!

Finally, this morning I had a VERY quick mini blogger meetup with Emily @ Sweat Once a Day. She is in town for a wedding and needed a bike to keep up with her IronMan training. Since I don’t ride mine NEARLY as much as I should, I let her borrow it for the weekend.  So, not only did I get to meet her boyfriend, The Rocketship, but I also tentatively made plans to run with her at some point while she is here.  HOPEFULLY I can get that to work out!

I'm glad you got to meet Emily, but I'm more jealous of your bike. :) Of you having the bike. No creepy stalkerish connotations meant at all.

Hope your heel/Achilles starts behaving itself.

In addition to it being a FREE marathon next year, it'll also be on my 35th birthday. So, we should definitely add it to the series.

First, I thought you were putting stickers on your face the way my 2-year old does! lol Then I realized that you are just way talented in the photoshop department :P

I need to take lessons from you on this multi-part blog post thing... I always have multiple things that are jumping out of my head (like those sticker-things on your face). This is such a great way to address that!

Blogger meet-ups are fun!

Sammy... sad. His wife was mad. All attempts at bad humor aside... it is a tragedy and the running world will indeed miss his presence.

Yay for the mini blogger meet up!

And it sounds like you can keep Lauren company with your injuries? Although you are still running, you speedy devil.

I was surprised that Sammy was so young. I had forgotten too!

I sweated my thorns off on a short run tonight... damn, I'm not ready for warm weather yet. Sad thing about Sammy - funny this is the first time I heard the story about cheating on his wife though. My hubby always says, "A woman will be the death of me yet..."

I think you should do a "Poop Shorts' giveaway dude.

As far as the other goes....mid life crisis...affair or sports car?

Take the car....cheaper in the long 'run'...get it????

I'm with Shawn - I think you should give the poop shorts away. But not to just anyone. They need to go to your biggest running nemesis so you can beat him in your next race together.

I don't know about that thing of young elite athletes. I look at the pictures of Sammy and I have a hard time thinking he is only 24 years old. People are definitely fudging birthdays, IMO.

I'd love to know the course for the big free marathon. If I'm going to run a marathon in Vegas, I want to run up the Strip. If I'm going to fly out to Vegas for a race, get a hotel, and drink and gamble myself into oblivion after the race, the registration fee is the least of my worries.

That said, the concept of how its funded by sponsors is really, really cool, and I can't get to vegas for either one anyway.

I don't really follow elite running as a sport, so I barely knew who Sammy Wanjiru was, until I read a runner's world article about him in march:

This really inspired me when I was struggling with injury.

I seriously want to do the free marathon just because it's the most amazing idea ever! Definitely has my wheels turning, too. Totally want to support it.

Free Marathon driving distance from my house? Sign me up. But, I don't want to wait 18 months. Boo.
