Turns out, me. Who knew!? When you think about it, sleep is a pretty interesting phenomenon. It is sort of like how Kim Kardashian is famous. No one knows WHY it happens, it just does. So, each day, if our bodies don’t turn off for a period of approximately 8 hours a day, all sorts of interesting things occur:
Over eating, under eating
Leprechauns tell me to burn things
Confusion, memory lapses or loss
Basically anything that is bad that can happen to you (read: anal leakage)
Of course, just like everyone knows, when we sleep our bodies don’t actually turn off. In fact, during certain times, our brain goes completely bonkers. It throws out dreams and memories that not only are helping Leonardo DiCaprio limp along in his career but also do the fortunate service to put me in such awkward situations as being the towel boy for the lingerie football team and eating an entire swimming pool full of pudding (don’t ask).
Now, I know what you are thinking how do you keep your skin so smooth and moist!? what does this have to do with running?! First, loofah. Last night I had a conference call for work with India that went well past my bedtime. I’m not one of those people who talks a lot about work even in real life, so I won’t rehash it here. But, let it suffice to say that I normally get 7.5 hours of sleep and I had 3 fingers of whiskey on rocks 2 nights ago and woke up feeling much better than I woke up this morning after only sleeping for 5 hours. I need my beauty sleep.
The real secret to soft skin
But, I had 7 miles of tempo running on the schedule. Let me tell you, those were the hardest tempo miles in a VERY long time. Goal pace was around 6:40. I managed 2 at that speed, the remainder were somewhere around 7:00 and at some point I just gave up and turned it into a marathon pace run. I hate it when I have to bail out on a run – and it reminded me that sleep is oh so very important. But, unfortunately, so is paying bills – and I guess that is what I was doing up so late. If only I could figure out a way to convert pudding dreams to money....
Picture might have been dramatized, and apparently uggo-fied, to show sleepiness
How many hours of sleep do you get? Have you ever seen it directly effect your running, mood, mortality status, leprechauns?
Had this in my head the entire time I was writing this - Holla holla holla
Lately I've been averaging 3/4 hours a night since I'm writing papers for school. No time for running though, so it's not affecting that. Haha, I did get 8 hours yesterday and it felt AMAZING!!!!
I'm a horrible sleeper, have been for my whole life, but I can function pretty well on five hours. I ran 8 miles Saturday morning, and I got about six hours of sleep the night before.
I got 2 boys. they are 5 and 6. sleep..not sure I remember what that is...5-6 hrs of something that is close to sleep for me. Barenaked Ladies! love them! Canada in the house!!! or on the blog...all the same right!!!
Ah sleep! Kids are the devil. It's part of their plan to kill us slowly and inherit our homes and CD collections. I only get 6-7 hrs sleep lately and I'm on my 3rd cold this year. I'm thinking there is a correlation & need to work on 7-8 hrs sleep. Grrr.
Welcome to my world..... I have 3 night time conference calls with Asia this week. OMG, look at SUAR's comment. Maybe you should go back to working on the road....seems you get more sleep.
I'm just sitting here laughing because I haven't slept in ummmmm about 11 years but it's fine. Last night I was up til 1 am at book club, 3 am with 5 year old, then 7 am to get kids to school and I'm totally fine and normal!! JUST LOOK AT ME!!!! You can sleep when your dead.... :)
I'm impressed you go the miles done! I could run for a day on 5 hours, but it would catch up to me.
I'm a big baby about my sleep. If I'm not in bed before 10 (preferably before 9), I start to stress out and get real cranky that I'm not going to get enough sleep.
Honestly, I'm like a child: I could sleep 9 ot 10 hours a night and be very pleased (in the earlier stages of pregnancy, I could easily sleep 12 hours every night). Anything less than 8 or 7.5 is hard on me, but I can get by.
I usually sleep 7-8 hours a night. However, I'm thinking that's too little! Today I didn't set an alarm, and I pulled the blackout curtains shut... and I slept 11 hours! This after sleeping 10 hours yesterday! Guess I have some catching up to do...
Between traveling for a wedding and work chaos, my sleep schedule has been SHITTY this past week and a half. Yesterday I slept through my morning workout and finally got a decent hour of sleep. Skipping one run during taper for extra sleep? Best decision I've made in a LONG time.
I try to stay awake, but I'm usually asleep (on the couch) by 9-9:30. So, I get about 7-8 hours. I'm always tired, though (no matter how many hours I get).
Preach it brother! This chest cold thing and coughing fits are killing my quality sleep time. It is making me feel all blah and drained during workouts.
I wish I could get more than 6; I just can't. Blah - hate that! I wish I could under-eat when I am lethargic instead of over-eat. Hope you're rested up now.
This blog is meant for entertainment purposes only. For that matter, it even does that half-assed.I am happy to provide advice and tips, but have no technical "training" to provide medical or professional advice. So, ask away - I love to help. But, if you get hurt, can’t blame me!!

Anything less than 8 hours kind of wrecks me.
But props to you for running instead of sleeping. I guess that's the difference between runners and people who sleep in.
Um, yeah. What?
I just wrote about sleep on my blog yesterday. :)

Sorry about the late night and rough run. Go to bed early tonight (after you exfoliate of course)
I am a poor poor student and currently rock out on FIVE! Woe is me! I'd get thousands if I could.
People love cheerily saying 'wow! you function on five hours sleep!'
Yeah, I think the main problem for running and studying is that i DONT function on five hours sleep... ha ha

I'm sorry?
Sleep?
What's that?
It's been awhile.
I complained to my dr last year about being tired even though I exercise, eat right, and get 8 hrs. Her reply was 'maybe you need more than 8 hrs'.
FML.
I have a hard time functioning if I get less than 7 hours. 8 is idea.
My husband gets, like 6 a night. I would be a freaking basketcase.

I get between 16 and 19 hours a night. And I still have anal leakage. Go figure.

I would like 7, but my bosses keep giving me cute projects that reduce that to 5. Stupidness.

Sleep is good. 6-8 hours and I'm pretty solid. Hope that YOU have a good nights sleep tonight young man!
Dang kids!!
Is that the BNL singer that was into drugs or the one who isn't? I always get them confused.
Your photos turn me on.
Oh gosh. I never get enough sleep. 6 hours or less. I would love to get more! I don't function very well, on a daily basis :(
I like 8 hours. I read somewhere that the "ideal" number is 7, but I don't buy it.
Preach it brother! This chest cold thing and coughing fits are killing my quality sleep time. It is making me feel all blah and drained during workouts.
Wait, isn't this what work is for? Why are your eyes open? Or is that you in the first picture in your cubicle?

I can get by on 8, but usually get 9. Complete Bitch on anything less than 7.
