Superbowl Sunday = No run Monday

Do you see those six bottles of beer to the left? Unfortunately, I drank 4 of them last night and didn't feel up to running this morning.  When did I become such a lightweight!?  Oyy.  I think that some of it had to do with the beers being not Bud Light - these packed a punch!  But, not to worry, I've got 7 miles on the schedule tomorrow with 5 at tempo.

Just like most guys, I have lots of habits and am big on traditions.  I run the same routes in the morning, I like to bat left handed, I make the fog-horn sound when I go #2, and over the past few years (this will be my 4th) I drink black and tans during the Super Bowl.  (Side note - do people up north in Canada or overseas watch the Super Bowl?  I know that it has a large audience, but it can't be broadcast everywhere, right?)

A black and tan is a beer that is Lager or IPA on the bottom (tan) and a stout on the top (black).  Two years ago, 3D was all the rage and I still lived in Kansas City.  Last year, I was in Phoenix and hung out at my new place in Phoenix.  Both times I posted about the super bowl and my beer of choice.  Why should this year be any different!?

The first time I tried to float the stout on the top, it didn't work and just mixed together.  Luckily, it still tasted delicious.

Finally - Success!

Other than the beer, the football was great, the halftime show was sucky, and the commercials were just so-so.  But, here were my two favorite commercials - one of them is even sort of running related! Score!  Which ones were your favorites?

Nice beer. Saints colors. ;)

Those two commercials were my favorites (especially the finger kicker!), followed closely by the little Darth Vader. Now, I can't tell you which car was being advertised, but I liked the commercial.

Yay, a success for the beer this year! I have never tried that, but I think I need to. Maybe post-M2M this year, perhaps?!? (I am registered, btw :).

I didn't see any Superbowl but I did go for a short run during the half time show. I know, I'm lame!

I thought the half time show was pretty good this year?! Your just mad Janet Jackson wasn't there this year aren't you?

Love this. Especially since you posted some highlights from the super bowl commercials since I watched none of it just like jill! :) Oh, and love that you drink good beer. I linked your post about Beth's sticker and the many places people put them in my last post since I had to find a post about the person who put her sticker on the toilet. Yours was the blog that came up when I googled "SUAR sticker toilet". :)

Yes we watch the super bowl. We can either watch from a US broadcast channel from the border or on a Canadian-licensed channel. Usually the Canadian channels get to put their own ads on top of the famous super bowl ads - so you miss some of the good ones (but you miss the bad ones as well).

One thing is that when someone makes a mistake on the national anthem, all the Canadian viewers actually feel really really bad for everyone in the US - and we don't even comment on how fat her face looks. ... anyway I digress.

I thought the half-time show was from Tron Part II so I tuned to about 20 minutes of Star Trek Generations on another channel.

However the Franco Harris/Lynn Swann/Terry Bradshaw heritage was not respected ... but what can you do - next time.

I don't drink, but an O'Douls with a shot of chocolate milk makes for a sick virgin Irish Car Bomb. That's all I got.

PS Chris K says you rule.

Actually I do have more. Sure they watch the Superbowl everywhere, but Canadian commentary doesn't count. If I had an extra 10 meters of field width, Id be running a center a QB and 9 wide-outs and praying the defense didn't blitz. My point is that the CFL just isn't right.

My favorite commercial was the one with the Dorito's when the guy watched his friend's apartment and killed the fish and the plant and knocked over the urn, and then Dorito's brought back to life the fish, the plant AND Grandpa. :)
Hope your run is good tomorrow!

We don't get to watch the Superbowl, altho' even if it was shown on satelite TV, I believe that most SA men think the football players are wimps because they pad up while the rugby players 'go bare'. I don't have an opinion on that either way. I am pleased however that you posted the ads - I love the Pepsi Max one.

My favorite commercial was the one with Eminem - I think Buick? He looked hot!

people dont watch superbowl downunder, do you watch The Ashes (Cricket), The National Rugby League Final, The ARL (Aussie Rules).....the US is just another country from over here...

I liked the beginning of the Audi jailbreak ad, but then it sort of petered out.Yum black and tans.

I love mixing beers! Although, I am ashamed to admit that one of my favorite combos is Woodchuck Apple Cider and Guinness. Does the Guinness redeem it though/make me almost look tough?

Adding another note ... since the American Language is so close to Canadian ... we run the Super Bowl with the original commentary from the States. And I get to see my hero Terry Bradshaw.

The only difference is everything is converted to metric. You hear stuff like first and 9.14 on the Steeler's 41.1 yard line.

I consider running while hungover resistance training :) This way when you not it feels that much easier. I actually did my sub 7 pace tempo hungover, now imagine what I can do at 100% :D

Your all welcome for the solid training advice I just gave out there.

I'm with you--I don't do any running while hungover. I'm lucky if I can get out of bed. Not a good feeling!

The Hop Stoopid was my favorite. Oh, you said favorite commercial, not beer. Didn't have one this year.

Nice job on the b&t. That is an skill I have yet to perfect.

Here in South Africa we don't watch and most don't know about the Super Bowl. I've read some things about on blogs. We are huge on rugby and the current world champions. I would guess .02% of our population will know what the Super Bowl is. I like the beer mix, wish I could send you some SA brews to taste.

I'm not sure if it was on TV here (Mexico) but my Wisconsin-born DH found it on Sirius. ;)

Adam,

You disappoint me! 4 Beers stop you from running!?! That's just sad son . . . I did the Krispy Kreme Challenge on Saturday:(run 2.3 miles, eat a dozen doughnuts, run 2.3 more miles all in under an hour), and I still ran the next day! (granted, I felt like poo, but I ran) Checkout my blog post on The KKC:

http://locker29.blogspot.com/2011/02/krispy-kreme-challenge-racechallenge.html

If you want to know more about the KKC, I have a video from ESPN's coverage of the 2009 Challenge on there as well.

Next year you NEED to make a trip to the NC, tighten up your laces, loosen your belt, and make your wife and child proud to call you a man! ;)

mmmmm...black-n-tans....my favorite!

Yep, I think it broadcasts in many parts of the world, which is weird since it's soccer that's the world's most popular sports.

4 beers and you couldn't run the next day? I thought we could be friends but now I'm not so sure...

The beer looks good!

I have to say that I've never understood the interest in black and tans. Why would you take the best style of beer made (stout) and water it down with something else? Crazy...

I loved the little Darth Vader ad. Most of the commercials left me underwhelmed, though.

I always thought that to correctly pour a Black & Tan, you tilt the glass? That was what I learned for making layered drinks in the bartending class I took (but in fairness, we all "had" to drink each other's creations throughout the class, so I may not be remembering correctly given the number of participants in the class).

I too was underwhelmed with the commercials - though in fairness, wasn't paying that close attention.

My favorite: Volkwagen with the kid dressed as Darth Vader.

Only 4 beers?
I really thought you needed a spoon to separate a Black and Tan (or Half and Half, Poor Man's Black Velvet, Snake Bite, etc.)
