Virtual Freeze Your Thorns Off 5K - Results Summary

How do you tell the story of so many awesome runners with only one blog post?  Lots of tables.  That is exactly the task that is in front of me as I sit down to finish this summary report.  Oh, I could write a quick blurb about each race - but with 50 race reports and my selfish addiction to sleep, I ruled that out...  (that said, I have read them all and will comment on each)

But then I thought - "Of course!!  When my wife says "fine" it really means NOT fine. A picture is worth a THOUSAND words!!" So here are the race reports - in billions of words pictures.  Sadly, there was no nudity.  The gauntlet had been thrown down - and I left disappointed. **Sigh**

Apologies if I didn't specifically call out your race report!

For those of you looking for the prize winners - scroll down to the bottom.

Getting ready to run
First things first, what do you need for a race?  You need a race bib!  Some were so creative to actually make their own race bibs without any prompting from me.  Awesome.

Katie at Run for the Bikini created a race bib with 19:59 as the number - her 5K goal for 2011.

Deanna at Miles to Run created a bib - and then ran the 5K in what looks to be either the basement or some sort of dungeon

Normally, I think of myself as a pretty upbeat guy.  However, I must bring the worst out in some people.  Specifically, Kovas and Chris K.  Check out their bibs below (and read their reports - hilarious).

And Chris K's mention about the beautiful California weather - and slight jab at Kovas

This race was one to Freeze your thorns off.  As expected, everyone didn't disappoint (except for Chris K and his warm Cali weather).  Although, some of your tried to convince me that you didn't actually have thorns.....Kim @ ILax Studio.

As I looked at everyone's pictures, I quite literally got warm fuzzies in my pants chills down my back.  BURR.  I remember running in cold temps like these, but I am trying to forget.

In a world of pink rocking the Shaq shorts OVER his tights

Sister Bison ran on the water?  Maybe she jumped from ice pad to ice pad

Burr.  That is all I have to say about that.  Burr  (Stephanie @ Run to Health)

Heather's kids had a blast out in the snow - or they were torturing each other.  Either way, good times were had by all.

Rose @ Eat Drink & Be Meiri getting ready for her treadmill run

Laura @ Bosie Full Life seemed to be doing some sort of laps around her living room for the 5000M.  Hey, whatever it takes - PLUS she has a forefoot strike!

TahoeGirl was very....chapped

Lin @ Mission Marathon had a race buddy - who seemed less than impressed with the thought at going running. (I'm totally coming to your house and bringing my rickshaw!)

Georgia Snail also had a race buddy - but his was way more furry.

Jill @ Run for the Hills looking rather festive with the Christmas spirit (maybe she knows Santa the runner?) before her run.

Staci @ She Runs in Sandals actually didn't run in sandals - she ran barefoot.  In the cold.  BURR.

And finally, Marcia @ TeamMarcia took the prize for "best mummy costume".  Nice work

I'm seriously a FIRM believer that it doesn't matter your speed so much that it matters that you get out there and MOVE YOUR BUTT.  That said, I thought it was awesome how there were so many different ways to represent the results.

Pam @ Thirty Smirty who just turned...  31! (Go wish her happy bday)

Julie @ Adventure is out there and her VERY dusty treadmill.

Bobbie @ 0 to 26.2 and her solid 5K result

Kim @ Bookworm Runs and her SWANKY treadmill result.  Unfortunately, she still got tired though - stupid technology.

Heat Runner and her treadmill result, while watching the news IN Tuscon on shooting :(

The Running Green Girl and her GREEN Garmin.  Appropriate.

Speaking is swanky, Jeff @ Detroit Runner and his awesome new Garmin 310XT.  The X stands for... Xwesome.

While still others (Alanna) hilariously defaced the running cacti.  She forgot to sign up, but decided to run anyway.  I think that there are two ways to know that your race has "made it".  1: You have race bandits, 2: Some guy streaking through the race naked screaming "I'm number 1!!".

Tricia from Endurance is only Physical had some pre-race tacos to get her in the running mood.  Carbo load. Mmmm

I am not sure why, but this picture CRACKED me up.  Laurie @ Jogging Stroller Mom said that she didn't actually want to freeze her thorns off, so she channeled her inner speed skater.  Well played, well payed. (The look on your face is scary!)

Jamoosh @ Last Mile Lounge got lost and had the longest 5K time ever.  I'm thinking he meant to run 31 miles instead of 3.1.  Thankfully he stopped after 19.

Gene @ Accountability knows me far too well.  Post a double-entandra picture and get a shout out on the blog.

There were TWO video submissions.  One made me laugh and one made me a bit jealous of running with dogs and the fact that Arizona doesn't have any snow.  First, Andrew @ Running Man Wannabe posted this picture of him running in shin-high snow.  He is in Canada, so he would measure the snow in the metric system......so, as long as my conversions were right, it probably was about a kilometer thick.  Hopefully he is all healed up from the fall:

I tried to embed Sean from In Clean Air's video however I couldn't figure out how to do it.  FAIL!  You should go watch it on his blog here.  His cute puppy says so!

Finally, one of my favorite pictures from all of the pictures was Anne's @ Asthma and the gift of running.  Doesn't it look like her running partner is taking a swig from a flask?   What is in there, Anne??  Water??  Righhhht.

Here are the blogs of the runners who ran in their meat form.  They were the ones who had the pleasure of putting up with my poop jokes IN PERSON.  Luckily there were only 2 kids around - and they were small enough that they don't know any better.

Here is the final list of the virtual participants.  I thought about linking to the actual race report, but I'm too lazy instead just decided to give a shout out if there was a race report posted.  Overall there were 133 virtual participants.  That means that, as a group, we ran OVER 400 miles (650 K)!!  Crazy.

I won, I won!!! :-)

Thanks for hosting the race, it was a blast. Now I need to find time to read all the other reports....those pictures are awesome!!!!!!

MCM Mama said...

Ooh, lots of new blogs to check out!

Thanks for organizing!!!

RunnuRMark said...

Hey, I tweeted you my time! ...unless it didn't count because I ran on Sunday.

Damn. My Body Glide is almost gone. I was hoping I'd win some.

C2Iowa said...

Well done Adam. Very well done. Thanks for putting it together and putting up a great virtual 5k.

Jill said...

Ok, but I still want a race medal!!!

Tim Wilson said...

Nice write up Adam! I am not sure why you did't write a synopsis of each and every blog post, you know like at least one 30-40 word paragraph for each post? It is only time :)

Thanks for putting this all together. Even though mine was only "virtual" on the day of I did get 8 miles in the next day on the trails :)

Staci said...

Thanks Adam for hosting such a great race. Will be reading up on some more of the race reports during the week. I bet you didn't think it would take so much time to organise a race - much appreciate your effort and well done to all other 132 participants.

Emz said...

holy shnikes.

did this take you 800 hours to write?

Anne said...

Thanks for putting all this together...Wow!

BTW, re: the flask...how else do you expect us to stay warm for our long runs out here. Anyways, remember, we're in Quebec, where the legal drinking age is just a suggestion :)

Amanda@runninghood said...

Oh this is too cool! I hope to get in on the next one. You rock...so many people were in on this. Way to get people moving! One more reason I love your blog. :)

Chanda M. DeFoor said...

Pretty cool! What a neat idea.

Angie Bee said...

how fun!! I love checking out new blogs!

abbi said...

This is the best recap either. The dungeon was a nice location for the virtual 5K! I have more blogs to check out too.

Julie said...

Adam - That was a simply awesome recap of everyone's races!! You ran a spectacular virtual race for us!! THANK YOU!
Too bad one of the prizes wasn't soap and a wash rag - thanks for sharing my dirty secret with everyone ;-)

Alanna said...

My 3 year old would almost certainly have run around naked shouting "I'm number 1"!

Jess said...

Goodness, I can't imagine the logistics of hosting this! How did you have the time to put this report together? Are you ignoring your wailing, infant son?

Rose said...

How awesome that so many people ran it!

But, listen, mister, I totally did not run on a treadmill. I just took my starting picture while inside. I dodged drunk or homeless people, and was stalked by a taxi.

My treadmill tries to kill me if I run too fast.

If we send you a SASE will you send us one of those nifty race medals?

Molly said...

this is great, I have a bunch of new blogs to check out : )

Allie said...

I'm such a slacker, I never reported. I ran 8.5 on Saturday, I swear. I was going to report the 3.1 but I was so upset about my hip hurting that I still haven't plugged in my Garmin from that run. I find that pretending it never happened works wonders.

Congrats to everyone that ran and someone needs to get Jamoosh a map! :)

ShutUpandRun said...

I am loser I didn't do it. I can't run a 5K unless it is in the water with the PP. Would that be acceptable??

Katie said...

Wow this is a sick round-up Thank You!

I loved reading everyones race recaps, especially, Kovas, Chris K, and Jamoosh. Oohhh and Opies (LOVE the video) :D

Congrats everyone who participated and Adam, you rock!!

GeorgiaSnail said...

In the interest of full disclosure, that photo was of Lily, The Sean's dog...I ran solo...

Chris K said...

I do not like Kovas

Pam said...

Dude, you totally outdid yourself on this one. You rock!

Teamarcia said...

Damn I could have used that Body Glide.

Andrew Opala said...

Great job, I hope feedings and work did not get in the way!

right at the end of my post in the smalled typeface I could find it says

5k time- 42:43

I hope you include that ... it happened to be the slowest of all I read. I was chicked by every chick in the virtual run!

Andrew Opala said...

Congrats Nej, Laurie and Raegun!

Kim (Book Worm Runs) said...

Adam, thank you so much for organizing this and for putting this recap on the blog...it must have taken you forever!! Lots of new blogs to chekc out :)

Laurie said...

Wow, that must have taken for ever to put together. I loved reading Chris K and Kovas' reports... funny stuff. Thanks for putting this together. Also, I'm super excited I won something... thanks!!

bobbi said...

What a great recap (and a LOT of runners!!). Congrats to the winners!

Jamoosh said...

Great job Mr. Race Director!

Barefoot Johnny O said...

Any prize for thinking of you while naked?

destinationathlete said...

Well, I have a marathon race report up now (no computer access till today) - so technically I DID freeze my thorns off. :)

sisterbison said...

Wow! This post must have taken FOREVER to write! Thanks for taking the time to do it, I greatly enjoyed it, AND the race:)

Adrienne said...

This is a ton of work! Remind me to never host a virtual race--ha ha.. It was great though. THanks.

Found you a little late to join this time around. Maybe you can host another in a week or two. :-)

Next time I'm in.

kilax said...

I love the photo/video recap with commentary! Yay! Thanks for including my pic and organizing this! I am excited to check out all of those blogs!

Katie V. said...

Woops! I left a comment about the race but perhaps I did not report properly....I ran it in a snowstorm and went 9.25 but the first 5km was in 35:24. Slow but not bad for deep snow. Woohoo!

Kovas Palubinskas said...

Xwesome? I think I prefer the nudity.

ajh said...

I'm sure you spent a lot of time on this! Very fun! Jealous of all of you who got to run it together.

Raegun said...

Wow - I'm thrilled to have won (if not a little embarrassed that I'm the only one who has yet to post my race report!!). I promise to get it up as soon as I get over this cold/flu. My 44-minute time should have been my first clue I was coming down with something! :)

Her Name is Rio said...

Wow, Adam- that is a lot of runners! Congrats winners!

Kayla said...

That is a lot of info to put on one post! Wow! Thanks for organizing and posting! :)

Courtney @ I CAN DO THIS said...

Wow, Adam! How badass are you now! What a great recap. So much fun! If I hadnt' been running my first marathon, I would have participated, and DEFINITELY will next year. You're a trip!

GISrunner said...

Bad blogger that I am, I still don't have a recap posted yet ... but I did 4 miles on 1/8. I decided to take the middle 3.1 with the (slow) time of 38:19. It was a cold day & the wind nearly blew my frozen thorns off!

Thanks for hosting this & love your great recap post!

Tricia said...

Love how everyone else is all serious decked out to run....and I'm scarfing down pre-race tacos. No really, I love it :) *heads off for more tacos*

mindysmarathon said...

I am so sorry! I did run my 3.1 (33:10), but I forgot to post! Great job everyone!! Thanks for hosting, I'm make sure to post next time!
