Are you a morning/afternoon/evening runner?

Below is a conversation with my wife after my 3:00pm, 7 mile marathon pace run at 7:25 pace:

Wife: Wow, you look TOUGH.  How was your run?
Me: Sucky.....sucky...run *gasp* *gasp* I hate running in the afternoon.
Wife: Huh. You smell, you should to take a shower.

No matter what anyone says, having a good shoulder to cry on is the best thing in the world.

Just like any other guy, I'm a man of routine.  I've once said "if you can't predict a man, you're thinking too hard".  And, for the most part,  I believe that.  I run in the morning, I poop around 9am, I watch like 4 versions of the news, and then I go to bed at 10.  Throw in a little wine and some business time and you've got yourself a solid Tuesday.

I haven't always ran in the morning.  I travel full time for work, and for all of 2009, I was staffed in Atlanta, GA.  That means that I flew from Phoenix, AZ to Atlanta, GA every week.  To try to stay at all regular sane I would try to stay on Pacific time zone. That means that I would run around 10pm Atlanta time and stay up until 1am (10pm Arizona time).  It was fine, but I never seemed to hit my running groove.

When I run in the morning I feel refreshed with seemingly limitless energy.  While sleepy, as long as I poop, I rarely have any issues (as long as I am not suffering from the brown bag blues).  I almost never eat anything before I run so I never have any stomach issues.

However, in the afternoon things change.  Basically, I've had all day to treat my body like an amusement park fuel poorly and not properly hydrate.  Mix that with the fact that I'm almost always rushed to "get it over with" it is never a fun experience.  Either I try to drink a bunch of water to make up for the day and I end up sloshy or I eat too much food just before and I end up barfy.

So, while I always get my run in no matter what the time of day - I am most certainly a morning runner.

So, when do YOU like to run?  Or - when do you HAVE to run?  Leave a comment and let me know.  I tried to find a online survey but I gave up after hunting for too long.

I definitely have to run in the morning or other "duties" seem to take over my run time.

Morning runner for sure. Winter I try to get out in the afternoon once in a while just so I see the sun. If I don't run or workout in the morning there is a 75% chance I wont run or workout at all. I lose motivation as the day goes on.

Definitely a morning runner. If I don't get it done in the morning, I have ALL DAY to make up random excuses to skip it...

Like you, I like to run in the am. It is really hard when I train for things with my husband, because he likes to run midday or afternoon!

I just checked out this and your other postings - ha, you sound like me. I missed my run this morning so I have to do it when I get home ... that sucks! Makes me cranky all day. Good luck.

I run during lunch if it's a work day and in the mornings if it's not.

Ditto. Morning is the time to run. Nice empty stomach, relaxed, calm. Sometimes schedule forces an after-work run but those are usually pretty frantic and stressed as I'm rushing to get it done & then get home in time to relieve the nanny. bah!

I prefer running in the morning. My times are better...body feels better..it's just not always doable.

I have to run in the morning because if I don't, I won't.

I run whenever I can...this morning at 5:46 am, Monday was after making supper for the hyenas. I pretty much can handle it anytime....happy holidays Adam

I would like to be a morning runner. I feel a bajillion times better when I run in the morning. But three kids, and a full-time job, leaves me mostly with night-time runs. Which seem to generally suck.

I love morning runs, but I don't like to get up as early as I would have to on a normal work day. I don't mind getting up at 5AM on a Saturday for a good long run, but something about during the week...just can't stomach it.

As a compromise, and a sanity check, I typically run at lunch every day. I find my runs are decent but I'm tired in the afternoon as a result. I'm willing to take that, and I just hope that my coworkers take it easy on me. If something comes up, I have a lunch meeting or some other reason why I can't run at lunch, I'm VERY moody.

I've tried running at night, doing speed work with my team, and other things and I just hate it. I never know what/when to eat (always get bad side-cramps), and after work is the only real time I get to spend with my kids, so typically I won't do it unless I really have to.

DEFINITELY prefer to run in the afternoon/evening. I just feel much looser and more energetic in the afternoon. But I always do my weekend long runs in the morning so it doesn't screw with the social life (HA!) too much.

I find that if I don't run before work, then it'll never get done. My feelings never enter into it; I just get too busy after 8am to break away.

Also, I always knew that dental hygiene was foreplay. That also explains my pants tent at my last root canal.

Sometimes it sucks to get up so early and lately it's been cold as balls but I'd rather get it out of the way so there's no excuses about squeezing it in and I never regret it when I get out there and start.

I'm a morning runner all the way. And if I run in the morning, I'm way healthier for the rest of the day. If I wait until the afternoon or evening, my plans frequently get derailed by happy hours or general exhaustion.

My ideal running time is around 9am...little things like work get in the way of that. So, M-F I run after work and on the weekends I run arund 9am.

Favorite time is around 10ish in the morning...no 5am running for me if I can help it!

honestly I run any of those times, just depends on the day. IF I could pick a time to run the same every single day I would pick around 7 or 8 so I dont have to get up AS early but still get it done in the morning :)

Hmmmm....I used to run only at night. Then I switched to mornings...and then to day. Basically, anytime I can fit in.

I like to run after work, I can take out all the stresses of the day on the treadmill (or outside when I'm lucky). Weekends, if I get my own devices, I'll run in the late morning or early afternoon. Occasionally I'll have to do a morning run, but never before 8am.

Sunrise runs are for suckers, although, they are beautiful. :)

running... oh yeah, I KNEW I was forgetting something...

I'm definitely an evening runner. I have way more energy and I can run forever. I'm sort of in the process of switching though. I need to start running in the morning, it's way easier with my schedule.

I have to run in the morning. Otherwise, I'll just complain about it all day and then have a terrible run...IF I do it at all.

I run almost solely at night, but my stomach feels much better if I run in the morning.

Hugely prefer to run in the morning. When I am working it is afternoon though. Almost never at night.

This year (until my owie), I ran mid-morning, and it worked well. During the summer of '09, I usually got up at 5:00am to run and while I was too wimpy to do that this summer, I enjoyed those early morning runs.
Now, if you'll excuse me, it's business time.

I'm definitely a morning runner....otherwise, I find too many other things to do, and let's face it. I'm a chick. If I go through the trouble of showering/dressing/hair-doing, there is little chance I'm gonna go through that all again because I put off my run!

Morning for sure! The earlier the better. I'm just a morning person and start to crash around 1pm. I'm pretty useless after that unless there is a happy hour involved. I once went for a run after happy hour. It was weird.

I think SurveyMonkey.com will hook you up with an online poll next time you're interested. I can't remember if it embeds or not.

I am an all over the place runner but do enjoy morning run...and not to lie but sometimes that is to get it over with.

Morning preferred. The only consistent time I can count on, plus it gives me mojo for the rest of the day. We need a Gilbert bogger meet up/neighborhood nude run bfast at Joes.

I used to live in the middle east, so I would run at night, after the sun had set. However, over one summer, where my sleeping schedult got flipped, I went for a run at 4am, before the sun had come up. I discovered the quiet of morning running and tried that....

I still go for runs mostly in the evening - I'd rather people not see me running around SO slowly it shouldn't be called running - but I would love to be able to get up early :) My bed is just too warm in the morning :D

For most of the same reasons as you, I am a morning runner. I have had some decent runs (the kind with running shoes, not the ones known as "the trots" but maybe some of those as well) in the afternoon, but those were few and far between.

Don't eat before you run? Really? I hate running on an empty stomach. I eat some oatmeal with peanut butter which completely staves off hunger.

As far as when I like to run.....I go both ways. 3 ways actually. Mon/Wed is at night after work. Tues/Thurs is at lunch. Saturday is morning, but not too early. That's how I roll.

I prefer to run in the early am, but my work schedule has me running in the evening.

I run in the evenings after work. I am NOT a morning person. Almost all the races are in the morning, so I make myself get up for those, but I don't like it. :)

Laura said...

I pretty much only run in the morning, since that's when most races are. However, when I'm working out at the gym (either elliptical or weights), I tend to go as soon as I get done with work but before I've eaten dinner. I usually order takeout and then whenever it comes is the end of my workout. (Except for the one time the dumb restaurant took 2 hours and I stopped early).
