Social Media and Blogger Meetups – San Antonio!

Social media is interesting. I have a blog, a podcast (that I’ve sort of abandoned), a twitter account, a facebook page, and even a daily mile page (that is also being neglected). Through each of these I’ve connected with people I consider friends but have never met. People I consider REAL friends. Not the kind of friend that you accept on Facebook because you had 8th grade science with them, but people that I feel that I could go to dinner with and pick up exactly where we left off during our last Google Chat conversation.

At the same time, I feel like social media is a bit like internet dating. It is something that millions of people do but hesitate to mention in public. Sort of like pooping. Yeah, I said it - social media is like pooping. It is something that everyone does but no one wants to admit at a party that they just dropped a steamer or chatted with a buddy online about intervals or marathon taper for 3 hours.

While I have emailed back and forth with a number of people, there are a select few that I’ve been able to connect with in real life. There is the Phoenix runner crew of Jeff, Lauren, and Demi, but also more recently the Denver meetup of Beth, Jill, and Tara. It never ceases to amaze me how the people I meet are real and genuine and usually quite spot on with the online persona that they portray.

Has anyone else met anyone in real life that they met online months or years before?

The day before the Rock and Roll San Antonio a few bloggers and I are going to get together. Please let me know if you are interested. The more the merrier. I promise that I won’t even MENTION poop. At least not until desert comes – then all bets are off.

Taper is in full force, Monday was 5 easy miles at 8:00 pace, today was 4 miles with 2 at tempo of 6:44.  I'll do 7 more miles this week and then will rest up until Sunday!  I've even started to look for spurs and a big foam hat. You know, to blend in with the Texas locals.  YeeeeHawwww

Adam - good luck with your goals for your marathon. I hope you don't get sick right before your marathon. Funny how my marathon is this Saturday and I started feeling a little sick today as well. I really hope that it is nothing as well.

Enjoy! Look forward to reading about it as always!

Yep, I think meeting you would be like hanging out with poop.
Good luck this weekend!

I would love to have a meet up, but it doesn't seem like a lot of people are in my neck of the woods (I'll post something tonight about it). Good luck with your taper!

So close (three hours away) and yet so far. I would make the drive, but I am beer tasting on Saturday.

Yes, that's right, beer is more important than you. :-)

"social media is like pooping" - THAT'S why Beth is so good at this!

I'm totally running the race in my cowboy boots but I've decided to leave the spurs at home.

Hubs will be in chaps...assless chaps.hope its not TOO cold on sunday.

Dumb texas stereotypes

I'm running the full, too! Not sure what my plans are, but I'll be coming in on Friday and leaving Tuesday. If I see a huge congregation of people gasping over your talk of poop, I'll come over and say hi!

whatever. you are so not invited to lunch on the 19th at noon for sushi [here].

It would be fun to get together with online people but if Chris Hansen from NBC shows up with a camera crew I'm going to be so Pissed off! :)

I met my wife online in 1995, we chatted for 18 months. Then we met, and were married a month later. 13+yrs of wedded bliss, a 3 year old, 2 pugs, a cat and a large mortgage later, I am a believer!

I've gotten together with a few people in real life who I met on Twitter. It's definitely an interesting way to meet people!

Good luck with the marathon! Stay strong through the last few days of taper!

I met one blogger, Renee, for like 2 seconds. Then she had to get on a bus and I had to finish volunteering. whatever. I need some more blogger meet ups to happen in my life. They are a way awesome way to meet other runners!I'm jealous of people who live in big cities and get to do this more often (coughphoenixcough)!

My daughter and I just had this conversation about blogging being a bit like Internet dating. This summer I got to meet Jill too! Loved her. Bloggy friends are real friends that want to talk about running and all that goes with it like I do!

It's three hours away; I've gotta head out for the weekend back to Indiana, but would have loved to see y'all.

It's beautiful in San Antonio just, seriously, don't spend all your time on the River Walk... it's a trap. San Antonio has great restaurants as seen on Man V. Food.

Have a great time and good luck!

I'm pretty sure you just called me real and genuine.

Getting...choked...up.

Very nice comparison b/t poop and social media, btw.

Happy tapering!

Glad you cleared that up! Just when I thought maybe you stopped running because I didn't see you on Daily Mile anymore! And no new podcasts being automatically downloaded from iTunes! And.... (just kidding)

Have a fun time in San Antonio with your foam hat! Remember- everything is BIG in Texas!

how thoughtful! I consider you a friend too adam!! :D
haha
i have not had the opportunity to meet with any bloggers in real life... yet
Also, you need to make another podcast ;) get on it boy!!

Hi! I'm Erin said...

Kim (ilaxstudio) recommended I read your blog. She and I met via our blogs and are now super-duper real-life friends.

In summer 2009 I met another blog-friend in real life so that we could run a half marathon together.

So, yeah, I've met blog friends in real life...mostly due to running.

So when you eventually come run the Rock and Roll Chicago Half you can meet Kim and I and it will be like old times :-)

Hopefully one day I can meet some of you in person. Being on a different continent and on the other side of the planet doesn't help the cause. But that's what makes social media so great.

Good luck at the race. I am in taper mode starting this week also for the Space Coast Marathon in two weeks. (Yes, I do the 3 week taper. I find that 2 weeks just isn't enough time to fully peak.)

The correlation to pooping is so true. I find myself telling almost no one about my blog, even though it's how I've been connected to people I consider among my closest friends.

kilax said...

I LOVE LOVE LOVE meeting bloggers in person. Like you said, they are very cool, genuine people. I had so much fun meeting Lauren. I could have talked to her all night but had to get back to the hospital!

I cannot wait until we get to meet!!!

And I see Erin commented. :) She and I met for the first time to run together in Spring of 2009 and we see each other every week now - even our husbands hang out together.

I am so excited to hear about San Antonio!!! Have fun!

kilax said...

Oh, and like Lauren said, I tell no one at work about my blog and how it connects me to all of these cool people. But everyone else in my life knows about it!

Morgan said...

If I were there we'd def meet up! You know you and your wife are Spike and I's long distance BFF's... even if we've never met nor does your wife probably even know who I am! LOL!
