Of Sausage and Taper

Lately I've been busier than a Slot Machine on Social Security Check day. Don't get me wrong, part of the reason I've been busy is because of work sponsored dinners and my fascination with reality TV - but busy never-the-less. The good news is that I think I've been able to keep my blog reader only a day or two behind. Either way, here's what has been going on...

Gripped in Reality
As an example of my addiction to reality TV, I just 'found' Pawn Stars. It is like a down and dirty (Read: low brow) version of Antiques Roadshow! More because I can probably relate more to the people working in the pawn shop more than I can any of the other reality TV "stars".

Traveling is a huge sausage fest
I haven't gone to a "real" gym in a really long time. While I've thought it before, it struck me on Tuesday morning that there are a disproportionate number of guys who travel for work vs gals. The result is a sausage fest that would make even the Germans jealous. The funny thing is that it wasn't the 15 guys in the gym that made me realize that there was a little too much Kielbasa in the room. Oh no, it was the addition of two ladies! i was on the bike behind them when they were on the elliptical and treadmill. I chuckled to myself as guys would crane their neck to get a glimpse....of course all the while I was making a top 10 list of reasons I love and adore my wife. Pigs.

Foot injury
Speaking of riding the bike, I took Tuesday off from running and instead rode the bike for 40 minutes. The Peroneal tendon in my foot that was giving me troubles after RnR Mardi Gras is ever so slightly feeling a bit wonky. (I'm taking speaking classes from the Chairman of BP.) It doesn't hurt - instead it sort of itches**. Strange, but I know that something is going on. So, since my motto of late has been to not get hurt, I decided to back off just a touch. Hopefully it will pay dividends in the future***.

Since I didn't taper at all for RnR San Diego, I am having a hard time wrapping my head around pulling back the miles a full 2 or 3 weeks out from RnR Seattle. Because of injury or one thing or another, I haven't tapered or ran all-out but 2 or 3 times within the last 8 months or so. I know it is the right thing to do and I KNOW that I just need to suck it up. The one thing that is giving me motivation to do it? Math. I read somewhere that tapering for long distance races (13 mi+) can provide anywhere between 2-3% of a performance increase****. Since my marathons are 210 minutes, 2-3% is 5 minutes! I think that speaks volumes to how a little effort over the long haul can make a huge difference....which is exactly why I love running: A little effort goes a long way.

Tues: 40 min on the bike (14 miles) (~21 mph?...which is WAY off - was closer to 18mph)
Weds: 5.8 miles @ 7:56 pace
Tonight: 5 to 6 miles @ 7:30 pace

**That's what she said
***Unlike BP
****If only it worked that way in the bedroom

I am loving "wonky".

I read that same taper thing on 2-3% better on your run. HOLY SH*T, I'll take the 5 minutes, thank you. It better work sausage boy.

There must be some scientific study on the increase of testosterone after a female walks into the gym...I die from laughter after seeing dudes "break their neck off" after an attractive woman walks by.....

I like the idea of "sucking it up" and tapering... forcing yourself to take it easy is such a juxtaposition to "normal" people!

I was wondering how you were going to save the "noticing the girls on the equipment in front of me part". nice job :)

Your wife is one lucky lady! I feel the same way about my special girl (who reads this blog) and we will be sharing our 4th year of marital bliss next week. Ahhhh marriage, so nice to not have to think about the dating game anymore. Love you honey!!

I always wonder how I can't fathom running a long run at the pace I can run a marathon, it's like it all clicks and comes together on race day. But I know I have to be in prime shape for that all to occur (which I'm not!).

Today I was on the TM at the gym doing my thang (16 miles) at a pathetic 1-minute slower than MP and a dude pops on the TM next to me and looks over at my machine and matches my 6.5mph pace. Then he looks over every 10 seconds and soon, he's up to 6.8. Whoa, like that's suppose to impress me I guess. 2 miles later, he's off the thing and I never saw him again. Always makes me laugh.

Good save so I expect we will get to see this well thought out Top 10 reasons list in a future post. :)

I was so thinking "that's what she said" so that part gave me a good laugh. Hope the itching subsides and tapering works out.

I bet you left a greasy mess on the floor of the gym. That's what BP said!

Ha. Love the asterisks today.

I hope your foot stops "itching." I was just re-reading our correspondence about your injury and recovery for motivation. ;)

Does your foot really itch or did you just say that because the "That's What She Said" joke was just too tempting/good? I'm legitimately curious.

The manager at the gym where I work says some high percentage of guys join a gym to check out girls, not to work out. I feel like enough of them do truly work out. But maybe I'm too into my own workout to notice otherwise.

AND I have to say locking eyes from across the gym with a crush is HOTT. (Yes, with two T's!)

Love you too babe! Thanks for not checking out all the women, or at least not enjoying it. :)

Did you know that the thinking is that itching may be related to pain? That's what they say in my work related journals anyways. Take care of yourself!

Dude, I have been SO busy, but I have to say...when "Of Sausage and Taper" appeared in my blog roll, and the post starts with a Slot Machine/Social Security Check Day metaphor...I am all yours!!!!!

Your tendon issue intrigues me. Itchy? Perhaps a nerve thing? My advice: Foam roller the crap out of it. Just so ya know, that's pretty much my advice on everything, so take it with a grain of salt. Or sausage. Whatever.
Can't wait to read about RnR Seattle.

Rock on, Adam, rock on!
