First Endurance: EFS Review and Giveaway

A while back I was sent a sampler pack of Electrolyte Fuel System by First Endurance. They make a number of endurance fuel products including EFS sports drink powder, liquid shot (gel), and enough pills to make Rush Limbaugh take notice. While First Endurance is primarily geared towards triathletes, I figured that since over a third of triathlon (based on time) is running, this stuff would be good for me too.

I'm a sweaty runner. I lose a lot of salt during any run over 1.5 hours in length. So, I was particularly excited when I found out that EFS contains twice as many mg of electrolytes than any other major brand. (Yes, I realize that sounded like a commercial for Tide laundry detergent.) Also, since this stuff is used in triathlon, I almost always took some out on my bike rides.

It was really powdery (versus gritty) in powder form and mixed really well in small or large batches. But, probably one of the only "real" deciding factors came down to taste. The stuff just tasted a bit.....off. I don't know if it was the fact that it wasn't super duper sugary like Gatorade is or what. Either way, I honestly thought that it tasted a little like home made hard candy - but not the good kind. I tried to make it a touch weaker to see if it helped, but honestly to me that sort of defeated the purpose of the energy drink in the first place.

In summary:

Pros:
  • Didn’t you see the bar graph? The EFS' bar was WAY bigger.
  • It is made to be mixed at varying strengths. So, you can make it as thick as Paris Hilton’s** skull and it won’t be gritty.
  • The liquid shot is very calorie dense - 400 cals for the small 8 oz "flask".
Cons:
  • Taste. I just couldn’t warm up to the taste of the EFS.
  • Even with a little of the good stuff, I couldn't spice it up:

I really wanted to like EFS. I really did. In my mind, liking this stuff would put me in the same category as lots of super awesome triathletes. All that I would need would be some of those padded underwear and I would be official. But, unfortunately the benefits that it provided were not offset by the taste. It reminded me too much of that very bad batch of hard candy that I tried to make. So, it is with a heavy heart, I set free my fail (killer)whale eating my seal of approval.

**Needs to be thick to hold in all of that air

BUT WAIT!!! Just because I didn't like the taste doesn't mean you won't love it more than you love your kids puppy. So, I'm going to give away two containers of EFS and one container of the Liquid Shot. Honestly, the great thing about this contest is that you get to try something new vs the normal Gatorade, Nuun, HEED, chicken's blood, etc.

Since it isn't a HUGE giveaway ($18 bucks worth of stuff), I'm not going to make it super hard to enter:

1. Comment if you follow
2. Comment if you post anywhere else about the contest (Blog, twitter, your mom's fridge, whatever)

I'll draw a name end of day June 27th!

I received this product from First Endurance. I was not paid for my endorsement - besides, if I was paid, you'd think that First Endurance would have expected something more positive.

No need to enter me in the contest. But I do find it interesting how they compared themselves to other "fuels" and conveniently forgot to mention areas where they don't match up. It's all marketing and it's up to the athlete to find which product works best for him/her.

I am curious about EFS (hubby heard great things from a friend at work) but I too have a hard time if it tastes bad. I would love to give it a try :) I follow as Chris

I'm only entering if the Barcardi comes with it. Because if I don't like it, I'm gonna need a chaser!

I'm not commenting, because you made fun of my tri shorts.

This is not a comment.

Pick me, ya bastard.

Now what's this following thing? I have to publicly admit that I follow your blog??? How completely humiliating.

sure! I'll give it a try. I am a die-hard NUUN fan (even though they haven't given me any free stuff...) the cute little bottle will make bath time more fun than a rubber duckie! (if nothing else...)

A LITTLE bit of the good stuff??? You're definition of "little" is obviously different than mine... And that still didn't make it good? Hmm... Maybe next time try the good stuff first (alone) and then the EFS. Writ another review, it may be different : )

Ok, I follow and would be willing to try this and feed it to my kids...umm puppy if it is no good!

Hi Adam,

Hell yes, I am a follower:) Count me in!

You look like you are sixteen years old in that picture and I want to take the Bacardi away from you:)

Is "a little of the good stuff" included? I need that! I think it's the magical cure to my heel problem!

I like that chart you found (did you make that up or is that for real???) cuz today I was doing a longish run...well, attempting to do a longish run that didn't go so well (see heel pain above) and was using Heed and I thought it was kinda lame and weak. Well, duh, look at the picture. Back to the Accelerade I guess. Oh, unless I win this rock candy EFS stuff. Cuz I am a follower....who never wins anything. Oh, except cookies from Rad Runner.

Hey there. I follow your blog! Thanks for saying my knee looks a lot better now after that wipeout in the race!

I'll try it out!

During the last half that I ran with my friend I tried some electrolyte pills for the first time (made by Hammer)...have to say, I think they worked. (I definitely sweat a lot!)

So, basically, you're re-gifting. If this was a fruitcake giveaway I'd enter. I actually like fruitcake. My grandma soaks her's in RUM ;)

Thanks for the honest review. I'll pass on something that still tasted bad when Bacardi was added. Never a good sign.

Nice mix-in ingredient! Too bad it didn't work out for you. :) Did you use it to wash away the taste afterwards?

EricaH said...

Thanks for the honest review, shame on them for making you turn to the bottle.

I am a follower and would be willing to do you the favor of taking it off your hands, because friends don't let friends run drunk. :)

I'm curious enough to try this - I follow!

I follow your blog! How much sodium is in this stuff? Likeyu - I sweat *a lot* and have had cramping problems in the past. I currently use endurolytes, but with the small amounts of sodium, I find myself eating the stuff like candy. I'm looking for something that will give me a little more sodium kick...

I follow.. so I guess you can count me in. Some of my more "seasoned" tri buddies LOVE efs. I'll try anything once...

I still can't get over how well your fail whale eating a seal fits. Like it was meant to be just for your blog.

Did it occur to you that while watering down the drink may mean it doesn't work as intended, but adding hard liquor to it likely does as well? At least use some tequila to go with all those electrolytes!

And I guess I follow your blog. I follow your podcast too, whenever that'll be updated :P

RunnuRMark said...

okay, you know I follow. I'd really love to try it, even if it tastes like crap. I've been Captain Cramper this year.

And I also posted a link - entry #2!

Sure...I'm game. I'm running low on my current stuff, so maybe something new will be good.

I am actually a huge 1st Endurance Fan. Note their logo on my blog. I really like EFS LS for many reasons of which I won't go into. No wait, maybe I should since this blog is "boring". Seriously, send 'em my way. I will say this, Optygen HP by 1st Endurance is seriously amazing. It's not fuel, but absolutely keeps the legs feeling fresh. Not cheap, but a must for any endurance race where you want to PR. No, I don't work for 1st Endurance.

I'm a follower and, after that glowing endorsement, I'd love to try it! Mmmmm boy!

I generally write my comments on toilet paper and then flush them down the toilet where they belong. Does that count?

I agree with one of the first posters, and I don't know why this hasn't been picked up. The First Endurance shot is 4 times bigger than other gels - so it has four times the calories and four times the sodium and four times the carbs
Divide the FE numbers by 4, and it doesn't look so great. Didn't work for me anyway.
