Race Medal & – what now?

A few thoughts from the race and beyond:

Pat mentioned that he wanted a picture of the finisher’s medal. I took one, but since I’d have to get off my butt to get the camera, I poached one off of http://ow.ly/1cb2G. Probably one of my most favorite medals to date:

Sparkle sparkle!!

So, while the race was AWESOME, not everything was gum drops, lollipops, and rainbows.

The race didn’t have pacers. I mean, there were nearly 13,000 runners (3,500 for the full, 9,300 for the half) and not a SINGLE pace group. Annoying. Not really annoying for me because I was in between pace groups, but annoying for a lot of other people I'm sure. Shoot, I've been in races with fewer than 500 marathoners that have had pacers! I really hope that they have them for San Diego.

So, I love New Orleans and everything, but their roads SUCK. Suck like Drew Carry trying to be Bob Barker suck. In fact, my foot is just a touch sore because of all of the stupid pot holes and cracks in the roads.

When I was stretching after the race, I think that I may have pulled a ligament in my 'special area'. I was doing a butterfly stretch and seem to have gone a little too far. So, at the risk of saying something ENTIRELY inappropriate (because I really want to), here is a picture of what I was doing (look how happy she looks!):

(Side note, when I was looking for pictures of "butterfly stretches" this guy popped up. How could I NOT post him? Feel the burn, dude. Luckily he has that built in storage area to keep his socks warm while he is working out.)

So, what is next then? I took a stab at putting together a training plan for San Diego, but I am still tweaking it slightly. In the short term, I'm going to try to pull back the miles and focus on speed. Specifically, 3:20 speed (Tempo at 7:00, long at 8:10).

I'm also going to train for a half marathon. My first! I'm going to shoot for around 1:35 since that is my 3:10 Boston qualifying pace. I figure if I eventually want to do it for 26 miles, I had better get used to doing it for 13!

Pretty darn awesome medal.
And yes, the roads in NOLA are more like arctic ice floes made of asphalt than roads.

I ran the half there a few years back... in like 2003 maybe? I slept in my trunk the night before the race and somehow did not feel right that morning... nothing against the Tulane parking garage:)

Hi Adam,
Wow, you medal is really nice!!! I really liked the pacers that I have used in two of my races! I miss them when they are not provided:( They help me to stay on task and they aslo are there for encouragement:)

Oh Adam, I am so sorry that you pulled something in your special area! That sucks!! Hang in there and have a great week!!

Medals look nice. I may need to try some of those next year.
Good to see you planning already. Remember to rest first or your foot may not be all you complain about.

1:35 for a half?! You're crazy. You can do that in your sleep. I say 1:30.

Love the medal, don't love the dicky pouch....blech. But hilarious at the same time!

Congrats on the PR again. Love the medal! I think it's fair to say the highlight of your race (for ME) was the impromptu disregard for your shirt (e.g., the booby show)!

P.S. You're pretty damn fast, man.
