Group Runs

The beginning of a new year brings a number of new and renewed things: People make all sorts of new year’s resolutions, Dick Clark REFUSING to hang it up for the new years eve ball drop, and (whether I need it or not) I take my monthly shower and get my yearly bikini wax. The new year also brings a new year of running club membership – and there in lies my dilemma.

Now that I am back running great guns (36 miles last week), I finally feel comfortable enough to start running with a group again. Before, I didn’t want to let everyone see me limping around, tears streaming down my face in agony. I didn't want to seem like an amateur whose body rejected the sport that we all know and love. But now....now I am back to my normal spry self! Any running group would be VERY lucky to have me within their ranks. Right?

But, even though I have been running rather consistently for a few weeks, I still haven't joined my running group for any long runs. In fact, I knocked out a very solid 18 miler at 8:39 pace just this past weekend all by myself. I've found that, while running with a group is fun and provides a much needed "running outlet", running by myself allows me to set my own schedule, pace, and course. Three things that a control freak loves to have control.

While running and over the past weekend, I hemmed and hawed over rejoining the group. I did ultimately decide to renew my membership. The dues weren't that much and I would like to have the OPTION to run with them if I wanted to. That and, since my unit of measurement is always beer, I figured that the $15 yearly dues is the same as two 6 packs.

What is everyone else's thoughts on running groups?

You are out two six packs then... oh dear.

I would encourage you to go run with the group... I too love running alone but it can be nice to have a couple of folks to get out there with a couple of days each week. The group long run can wait.

oh, watch out for the ingrown hairs....

$15 for the option to run with your group...worthwhile in my book. I love the solitude of a solo run but remember how much I love a group run about 2 or 3 miles in...I try and find a happy balance of both.

I want to join a group it's just taht I could only ever make one run a week, the long run and my long runs are always so adventurous that I don't know if I would want to commit to running with a group the same place every week when I have the option to run all over Florida.... but then again... a group would've came in handy for my two recent solo long runs... so I say good job renewing and make sure to utilize it when you can! Cheers!

I think your lucky to be in the states, 15$ that would only get you 1 six pack in canada, plus maybe a single.

oh dear.

Maybe you should do the long runs by yourself and get with one of those hash groups that run to a nearby pub. "Run to Beer", that's a motto you could live with.

I love to run with others that are about my pace, but hate it when I feel I'm slowing someone down. Hate it more, if they are slowing me down (it can happen).

I'm in a running group and I really only utilize it once a month, but when I do, it's fun. It's only $20 per year, so I'm not really out much.

Use it when you want, but don't feel obligated to run with them all the time.

I joined our main local group last year and I haven't run with them once. I'd like to someday...but it's hard to fit my schedule around theirs.

....annnnnd of course there's the whole control freak thing. I have an agenda for most runs, and I don't want anyone to throw me off. Perhaps I'll get a run in with them this year. I'm sure I'll renew, for the newsletter if nothing else.

Wait I'm sick and delirious. Did you say Dick Clark got a bikini wax while the ball dropped?

"use them at your own risk" is what i think about groups, haha. I got injured b/c i tried to keep up with my group... I was too slow! So, definitely, setting your own everything is great.

Join the group, but make sure to tell them that you only joined because Jeffg told you to. If your running doesn't impress them, kill Ringo Starr.

I think that runners in general are awesome, and I know I've made lifelong friendships from the running groups I've joined. I'm sure that it'll more than make up for the 2 cases of beer, sounds like you'll just need to spend a bit more time during work trips down at the hotel happy hour to make up for the $15 for the group :D

Nice job with the running! I'll refrain from any comments about waxing, but in regards to the running group - I always say it's nice to have options.

Hrm.. have you thought about finding a "running buddy" with a pace similar to yours? Just a thought. Sort of the best of both worlds. You wouldn't always be running in isolation and you could avoid having to coordinate your schedule with what works for a bunch of people.

You only have to worry about your bud. And only the times you plan to run together.
