A new PR by 19 seconds! Yay!
I signed up for the fourth race in the Arizona Road Racer's summer series rather late, but I knew that I wanted to run it for quite some time. The two races that I've been to have both been very well run and organized. Lots of water, lots of food, and enough heat to sweat the the balls off of a Kenyan.
The tagline for the summer series is "Run like it is hot". Well, that is exactly what I did. I ran like it was hot, sweaty, and uncomfortable. Pat suggested that I have an over 90 (degrees) under 20 (minutes) contest for the summer. Let's just say that I can check that one off of my "life list". +90/-20.... DONE.
Mile 1: 6:19
The first mile went by with little to no fanfare. I forgot to turn on my IPod at the start of the race, so I was running in silence for the first 3 or 4 minutes. This race was rather large for a 5K. there were nearly 700 finishers, so there was a lot of bobbing and weaving at the beginning.
Mile 2: 6:35
This mile was TOUGH. There were a ton of hills both uphill and down. I tried my best to essentially sprint down the downhills and really chugged my arms during the uphills. Overall I slowed down a bit - actually a bit more than I wanted which was a bit annoying. But, I did get my IPod cranking with some JayZ - Big Pimping.
Mile 3 (and 0.1): 6:40 (6:10 pace)
The last mile was essentially an exercise in holding everything together. My legs were screaming and I was grunting them out, but I did! I even was able to pass a few people who were certainly "looking" the part. Hey, if you can't be good, look good - right?
